Meet the member: Shelley

Get to know Shelley

Shelley Higham is 44 and lives in Chorley, Lancashire. She has congenital heart disease and was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in 2018.

What’s the biggest thing you’ve learned about PH, or about yourself, since being diagnosed?

Not to take life for granted and always look after yourself

Do you have any other health conditions?

I also have asthma and depression

How long have you been a PHA UK member for?

6 years. The best thing about being a member is getting to meet other people with the same condition.

Where do you receive treatment for your PH?

Manchester Royal Hospital [a shared care centre, with consultants visiting from the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield.] I have a fantastic team there and they answer any questions I have.

What makes you smile?

My husband and children [pictured below]

What does ‘living well’ mean to you?

Looking after yourself and asking for help if you need it.

What advice would you give someone newly diagnosed with PH?

Don’t be scared, listen to what the doctors and nurses say to you, believe in yourself, and keep fighting.
