Self-Help programmes

Living with pulmonary hypertension can affect how you feel, not just physically. We offer two free self-help programmes, developed with clinical psychologists and designed specifically for people with PH — one for worry and anxiety, one for depression and low mood.

How the programmes work

Both programmes are based on Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), a type of psychological treatment that helps you manage how you feel by changing the way you think (the cognitive part) and what you do (the behavioural part).

Each programme is made up of four weekly booklets, designed for you to work through independently at home. One booklet a week, four weeks in total — a pace that gives you time to understand each section and practise the strategies before moving on.

Both programmes are free to anyone in the UK affected by PH. That includes family and friends, not just people with a diagnosis.

Who they’re for

These programmes are suitable for people affected by PH who are experiencing worry, anxiety, depression or low mood — whether you have a diagnosis yourself or are close to someone who does.

They are not suitable for anyone experiencing extremely severe symptoms, or thoughts of self-harm or suicide. If that applies to you, please seek immediate support.

Not sure which one?

Worry and anxiety tend to be about what might happen — racing thoughts, feeling on edge, finding it hard to relax.

Depression and low mood tend to be about how things feel now — persistent low mood, losing interest or pleasure in things, tiredness, trouble concentrating.

If both sound familiar, start with whichever feels more pressing. You’re welcome to order the other afterwards.

If you’d rather talk to someone

Our Listening Line offers free, confidential emotional support from someone who understands PH.
