The Great Escape

By Brian Phillips, living with PH

Hamilton Hamster looked through the bars,
His jailers were giants and reached to the stars.
They gave him his food and fresh water as well,
Nice fluffy bedding and a house where to dwell.

He was on a Life Sentence, but didn’t know why,
‘Twas always that way, he thought with a sigh.
Injustice was rife in this world where he lived,
It was time to escape or at least make a bid.

Long time was the planning, as he clambered about,
He worked on the doors and he nearly got out.
But the jailers did notice and wired them shut,
And another escape route, up in smoke just went phut!

They bought him a swing, which was hung from on high,
But he bit through the strings as to climb them did try.
Not a way could he see to get out the top door,
So he started researching a way through the floor.

It was plastic, with side walls some six inches high,
And lugs gripped the bars, to attack them he’d try
So at night, in the dark, he would nibble away
But was picture of innocence all through the day.

At last he was ready, the lugs were so weak,
The bars would pop out if he gave them a tweak.
He took a long drink, filled his pouches so full,
That his head was so round that it looked like a ball.

In the corner he’d chosen, he stood very still,
Then thrust out his nose through the bars of the grill.
Hunched up his shoulders, then tossed back his head,
And the lugs popped the bars, as already’s been said

A gap opened up, half an inch, maybe more,
So he clambered and scrambled, ‘til he fell to the floor,
He was out, he’d succeeded, he beetled away,
And though heard, never seen, from then ‘til today.
