All PH-specific treatments are prescribed by your specialist hospital team, but some side effects are managed by medication purchased directly from a pharmacy or high street shop. You might also need treatments for problems such as headache and colds, experienced separately from PH, in this way too.
Some of these medications are obtained ‘over-the-counter’ at a pharmacy, and others can be purchased freely ‘off-the-shelf’ at supermarkets or corner shops. It’s important to remember that not all of these medicines are suitable for people with pulmonary hypertension, and caution needs to be exercised with some of them. This guide has been produced to help you make informed choices.
Produced by the PHA UK in association with the specialist pharmacy teams at the Scottish Pulmonary Vascular Unit and the Sheffield Pulmonary Vascular Disease Unit.
