Raising money online

Setting up an online fundraising page is the best way of gathering sponsorship or donations, and it’s really easy to do.

JUSTGIVING.COM

We recommend the JustGiving platform for your online fundraising page. It’s the most popular fundraising website in the UK and has been around since 2000 – making it the same age as our charity!

You can use the page to tell people all about your challenge or event, and supporters can donate directly – meaning the funds come straight to us (no messing about with cheques or transfers!) and Gift Aid is claimed automatically.

Supporters can leave a personal message with their donation, or they can remain anonymous if they wish.

You can also share your page link on your social media channels to encourage even more donations.

Here’s how to set up your JustGiving page and make the most of it:

  1. Go to www.justgiving.com and choose the ‘raise money for charity’ option on the homepage.
  2. Search Pulmonary Hypertension Association UK in the list of charities and click ‘select’ when you see our logo. You’ll then be prompted to log in or sign up for a free JustGiving account.
  3. Now you’ll be asked to choose what you’re doing to raise money, with all sorts of options including taking part in an event, remembering someone special or ‘doing your own thing’ – whatever that may be!
  4. Provide details of your fundraiser and remember to tick the ‘yes’ box for the Just Giving question. This means your total will be automatically boosted by 25% at no extra cost to you or your supporters.
  5. Set a fundraising target. Be realistic (it’s a great feeling to know you’ve reached or surpassed it!) but don’t be afraid to challenge yourself either.
  6. Now you can personalise your page. Add a photo if you wish and tell people why you are raising money and why you want them to support you.
  7. Share your page and start raising money!

OUR ADVICE

  • When you write your page, share your personal reasons for supporting our charity. Including information about PH helps raise awareness of the condition too.
  • Posting regular updates via your Just Giving page will encourage people to donate more. Let your supporters know how your preparation or training is going and add photos if you can.
  • If you get cash donations directly from friends or family, you can add these as ‘offline donations’ to your page. Don’t forget to do this as you might reach your target earlier than you realise – allowing you to try and smash it even further!
  • When your fundraiser is finished, please remember to log back in and ‘close’ your page. That automatically alerts us, and we can say thank you and send you a special certificate 😊

Like most online fundraising page providers, Just Giving takes a small amount of donations to cover processing fees.

FUNDRAISING VIA FACEBOOK

If you’re an online social butterfly, and you’d prefer to keep everything in one place, setting up a fundraiser on Facebook is a great way of gathering donations.

The fundraising page is connected to your profile, so you have a ready-made audience in your friends list, and it’s really easy to share.

Select us from the list of charitable organisations and have some fun choosing a cover photo, setting your target and providing the details of your challenge or event. Just like any online fundraising page, sharing your personal reasons for supporting the PHA UK will encourage donations.

Facebook doesn’t deduct anything from donations, so every penny goes to us. Plus, your friends donate directly via Facebook, meaning they don’t have to go to another website after seeing your post.

And every time someone donates, it shows up in their friends’ news feeds, drawing attention to your cause.

The only downside to using Facebook as your fundraising page is that it makes it harder for those who don’t use the social media platform to donate.

Because Facebook often changes how it does things, we haven’t included a step-by-step guide to creating a page here. However, we promise it’s really easy – just ask Google, or use the search bar on your profile.

As well as fundraising pages, you can also use Facebook to collect donations in celebration of your birthday or other special occasion – without having to take on a challenge or organise an event. People often choose to ask for donations in lieu of cards and it’s an excellent way of raising a little more money (and awareness of PH!) at special times of the year.
