The British Hug

By Jillian Robinson, who knows someone with PH

Your fear is visible as you hear my cry,
You don’t know what at all to do,
That’s understandable, we are British.
Put the kettle on, make a brew.

Make it strong and stir it well,
No sugar, I take it white.
As you hand me my favourite cup (With the thin handle)
I know you are saying, ‘Are you really alright’.

We stare deep into the warm cup,
Breathe out and feel the steam wake up our face.
And the familiar feel, the smell, the taste, both bitter and sweet,
Brings us back into a calmer place.

It is just a drink, a brew, a cuppa,
Maybe some soggy, half dipped biscuits too.
But it’s also how we say we care
and we are sorry there is nothing else we can do.

So when you are enduring life’s storms,
And feel you are drowning out at sea…
Just know I am saying, I am here with you,
If I offer you a simple cup of tea.
